Who is Elohim? Powerful God

God is Powerful, The first name He uses to describe Himself declares this truth!

So Who is Elohim? Elohim is the first name for God found in the Scriptures. "In the beginning God (Elohim)" (Genesis 1:1). It is the plural name of "El" God, meaning all might or all power. Elohim is the Eternal mighty powerful God of Creation!

God clearly wants us to know that He is eternal. It is the first characteristic attached to the name of Elohim, the Eternal God. The rest of the Scriptures unfold this story, a story bound by time but a story that will play out in eternity, for God is eternal. The story of an eternal God in time redeeming sinful men so that men may be with Elohim in eternity. A never-ending blessed fellowship. Where there is no more sin and death and disease but simply a beautiful harmonious fellowship with redeemed humanity and our Triune God.

But at the same time, the characteristic of God’s eternality means that hell is also eternal, eternal torment. A place of weeping and gnashing of teeth. A place where there is eternal thirst but nothing to quench this thirst. It is eternal, just as God is eternal. And as I noted earlier this declaration, “In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth,” this is the beginning of the redemption story. The beginning of time, time that is given for man to know the powerful God, time to be brought out of eternal destruction and into eternal life.

Elohim is eternal and so everything that is seen in creation has come to be through Him. For, “In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth.” Jeremiah says of this, “Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for you” (Jeremiah 32:17). Nothing is to difficult for the powerful God —— Elohim!
